CORROSION RESISTANCE OF COPPER IN UNPOLLUTED AND SULFIDE POLLUTED SALT WATER BY METRONIDAZOLE

Abstracts
The corrosion inhibition of copper by metronidazole (MDA) has been investigated in unpolluted and sulfide polluted 3.5% NaCl. Electrochemical techniques showed that MDA is cathodic type inhibitor for copper, this behavior is clearly noticed from the open circuit potential, however the MDA renders the potential of copper to more negative. Potentiodynamic polarization curves showed that the efficiency in unpolluted and polluted sulfide salt water are 68% and 73% respectively. The polarization resistance Rp values obtained from EIS curves showed higher values in sulfide polluted than that obtained from the unpolluted salt water. These results indicated that, in the presence of sulfide ions, the protective MDA-copper complex showed higher stability. The Scanning Electron Microscopy SEM with Energy Dispersive X ray EDS spectra indicated that MDA prevented copper from sulfide attack by adsorption on the copper surface to form a protective film from MDA-copper complex.

AN in vitro EVALUATION OF ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF Drosera peltata J.E.Sm AGAINST CLINICALLY ISOLATED HUMAN PERIODONTAL PATHOGENS

Abstracts
Background: Periodontitis and gingivitis are the inflammatory disease in oral cavity and it’s a challenging task for a dentist to complete and safe treatment.
Aim: The study was aimed to know the antibacterial effect of chloroform, ethanol and aqueous extract of Drosera peltata J.E.Sm against clinically isolated human periodontal pathogens such as Prevotella intermedia, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans.
Materials and Methods: Agar well diffusion assay, Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assay and Minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were performed to assess its antibacterial potency. Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid and Tetracycline were used as standard antibiotic.
Results: Zone of inhibition was measured from agar well diffusion, where all the extracts showed bacterial growth inhibition in a concentration dependent manner whereas chloroform extracts showed the maximum inhibition at 16 µg/ml. MIC was determined by broth dilution in which chloroform extract also showed MIC (1.25 µg/ml) on A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. gingivalis. In MBC, similar to standard drug no colonies were found in chloroform extract. The orders of antibacterial effects were CEDP˃ EEDP˃ AEDP.
Conclusion: The positive results suggested that the Drosera peltata should be used as an antibacterial drug to periodontal therapy.

NUMERICAL SOLUTIONS OF ONE DIMENSIONAL WAVE EQUATIONS USING THE CRANK-NICOLSON METHOD

Abstracts
The description of Crank–Nicolson finite difference method for the numerical solution of hyperbolic partial differential equations, its numerical properties and its application to the one dimensional wave equation is presented in this project. The analysis of the method, i.e. consistency and stability was carried out and the method was found to be convergent. Numerical solutions of some wave equations were presented using MATLAB program, the results performed admirably when compared to the analytical solution.

FRAGILITAS OSSIUM: EARLY DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT PLANNING- NEED OF THE HOUR..!!!

Osteogenesis imperfecta is a rare autosomal dominant disorder of connective tissue origin predominantly affecting the skeletal tissue. It is characterized by bone fragility and low bone mass with a wide spectrum of clinical expression. With an estimated prevalence of 1 in 12,000 to 15,000 children, it has a broad clinical phenotype, ranging in severity from perinatal lethality to mild clinical forms without fractures.
Clinical evaluation involving thorough history is the foremost criterion which helps in diagnosis. A wide array of radiographic investigations, bone biopsy and genetic analyses help to confirm the diagnosis. The importance of childhood in terms of bone mass acquisition and spinal growth as well as the scope for dramatically improved outcomes with timely intervention all highlight the importance of accurate and prompt diagnosis of OI.
This review gives an update on the various classification systems, diagnostic methods and treatment options for the manifestations of this disorder.

AN APPROVED PROTOCOL FOR Cynara scolymus and Momordica charantia SEED SURFACE STERILIZATION FOR PRE-EXPLANT in-vitro CULTURE USING Allium EXTRACT

Abstracts

Globe artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) and bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L.) are two important vegetables being used as food sources of antioxidants for humans. As sexual propagation produces high level heterogeneity, plant tissue culture techniques can be employed for clonal propagation of disease-free germplasm of the species whose vegetative propagation is not guaranteed. Seed and tissue surface sterilization is a critical stage in establishment of aseptic in vitrocultures.
The surface sterilization process must be carried out on explants from field or green house, before tissue culturing. Artichoke seeds are highly sensitive to commonly used sterilization compounds. Low concentrations of disinfectants do not control contamination, and high concentrations over a prolonged time dramatically decrease germination rate. In the present study, an efficient sterilization procedure was developed for artichoke seeds. We compared the two most common disinfectants (sodium hypochlorite, mercuric chloride) with a commercial phytochemical extract, VEG’LYS, at various concentrations and durations of treatment. Treated artichoke seeds were cultured on half basal MS medium for four weeks. VEG’LYS treatment resulted in high germination rate with reduced microbial contamination compared to sodium hypochlorite and mercuric chloride. Results were further extended by using 0.1% VEG’LYS or 10% and 20% sodium hypochlorite, respectively, to surface sterilize bitter gourd seeds. VEG’LYS performed better on both sterilization and germination of seeds compared with sodium hypochlorite. Therefore, VEG’LYS can be used for surface sterilization without inhibitory effect on germination of globe artichoke and bitter gourd seeds.

NOVEL COPPER-BASED ANTINEOPLASTIC COMPOUNDS: CASIOPEINA II-gly AND III-Ea CAN PROLONG THE LIFESPAN OF Drosophila melanogaster

Abstracts
Aims: Experimental evidence suggested that Casiopeinas®, a copper chelate of new synthesis, can act, at least by three mechanisms: a) by forming adducts with any DNA bases; b) as intercalating agents; c) through the generation of reactive oxygen species due to the reduction of Cu+ 2 by means of Fenton reactions. The goal of the present study was to evaluate the effect of Cas II-gly and III-Ea on the time of development as the index of cytostatic activity and longevity as the index of oxidative stress of Drosophila melanogaster.
Methodology: Forty-eight-hour-old larvae Canton-S wild type strain were treated with the following: 0, 0.5, 1 or 1.5 mM of the compounds until development conclusion. One- to three-day-old treated adults were placed in groups of 25 males and 25 females separately in homeopathic vials with standard food. Scoring of deceased individuals was done twice a week; once that data was obtained, survival curves were made and analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method.
Results: Results indicated that the highest concentration for both Casiopeinas® reduced the viability and rate of development of individuals treated, in inverse relation with the concentration, but it significantly increased longevity.
Conclusion: Results of these two indexes suggested that both Casiopeinas® acted as a selective factor of the fittest organisms.

DEMODECOSIS AND NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES

Abstracts
At the moment we can observe the growth of “non-communicable diseases” (NCDs) such as skin, allergic, neurological, oncological, ophthalmic, gastroenterological and others. A general practitioner, PhD and enthusiast-researcher with 49-years’ experience in clinical service revealed natural growth causes of the listed diseases.
Research started from an incident in 1973. By this time we examined skin of exposed parts of body of more than 2 million people from all over the world and the whole skin cover of 388 780 persons. 43198 persons sought for medical attention. 17824 persons with mity and 28 persons with healthy skin had acarological examination. 412 patients undertook biotope studies. Primitive demodectic skin changes were put on notice at 342 persons for progression study. To specify authenticity of observations the author applied autoinfection with Demodecosis in 1980. A control experiment was performed–infection of two kittens with demodectic material from author’s infected skin. At the end of August 1981 total skin lesion with Demodecosis at people was recorded. Based on immunology progress and a positive result of ethiopathogenetic treatment the pathogenesis of demodectic acariasis and its clinical masks was described. All admitted patients were put on outpatient care with ethiopathogenetic treatment and elimination of biotope from dust mite allergens. Fuller recovery was observed in 70% of patients with allergodermathosis and 95% of patients with allergy, which allows considering the cured cases were the clinical masks of demodectic acariasis.
Resume: Demodex mites cause homonymous acariasis, which is generalized pandemically now. Demodecosis is not diagnosed by clinical medicine in its integral appearance that is why its clinical masks constitute the most part of skin, allergic, oncologic and other NCDs.
Ineffective author’s addresses to official authorities during 34 years allow to address to contemporaries and colleagues with the offer to combine through the Internet into independent working team; to determine the place of work (clinic or research institute); to watch for selection and treatment of sick people with Demodectic clinical masks and after completion of their full recovery, to solve the issues of further eradication of the prevalent part of such “non-infectious diseases” as allergic, skin, oncological and other in large scale. RECONNOITRING DECISION MAKING PROCESS OF PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS

Abstracts
This study explores the decision making process of pre-service teachers in an action research course. The study was conducted amongst 80 special education teacher trainees undergoing an undergraduate teacher education programme. A survey method, with 31 items, was used in this study to explore the decision making process of these pre-service teachers. The results revealed that 75.6% of the trainees had already made their decision on their action research topic. 30.5% made their decisions by consulting their classmates while 7.3% from senior students and 12.2% from lecturers. A statistical method known as factor analysis was used to further analyse the data. Three prominent factors extracted from this study are intuition, rational and consultation. This study reveals that consultation with classmates play an important role in decision making. Hence, teacher educators also play a vital role in helping their students make right decisions. In conclusion, it is prevalent that teacher educators could facilitate pre-service teachers by forming learning communities and linking theory to practise.

CdFe2O4 AND ZnAl2O4 NANO-SPINELS: SYNTHESIS BY SOL-GEL AUTO COMBUSTION METHOD-A PERFORMANCE STUDY IN CATALYTIC WET PEROXIDE OXIDATION OF PHENOL

Abstracts
ZnAl2O4 and CdFe2O4 nanoparticles were synthesized by sol-gel auto combustion method and characterized by XRD, FTIR and SEM. The nanostructure of the particles were estimated by XRD through Scherer and confirmed by SEM. The synthesis method led to form the uniform particles with spinel structure. The particle size of ZnAl2O4 was smaller than that of CdFe2O4. The catalytic activity of the nano particles were evaluated in catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) of phenol from waste water. The use of hydrogen peroxide as the oxidizing agent in the presence of a catalyst has emerged as a clean and effective alternative among other catalytic oxidation processes. The results showed the high catalytic activity of both nano-spinels in this process. ZnAl2O4 exhibited higher activity than CdFe2O4 in CWPO process. The phenol conversion was 84% and 78% over ZnAl2O4 and CdFe2O4, respectively. The study revealed that these catalysts could be promising for oxidation of other water pollutants by catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) process.

STUDY AND ANALYSIS OF HYBRID ENERGY OPTIONS FOR ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION IN RANGPUR, BANGLADESH

All conventional energy resources are withering day by day. Ergo we have to shift from conventional to non-conventional energy resources. In this paper the combination of conventional and non-conventional energy resources takes place. We can give uninterrupted power by using hybrid energy system. Basically this system involves the integration of two energy system that will give continuous power. Solar panels are used for converting solar energy and diesel generator are used for producing electricity. Optimization of hybrid renewable energy systems looks into the process of selecting the best components and its sizing with appropriate operation strategy to provide cheap, efficient, reliable and cost effective alternative energy using HOMER. The optimization results of hybrid energy system consists of solar photovoltaic system with battery, inverter and generator and has the lowest total net present cost (NPC) at $323568 and cost of electricity (COE) of $0.384per Kwh.

ANTIOXIDANT PROPERTY OF LEMON-TEA – ROLE OF INFUSION TIME AND LEMON JUICE VOLUME

The study encompasses the effect of fresh lemon juice in varied portions (1, 2 & 3 mL) to tea (green & black) after infusions for 5, 10 & 15 min in uncontrolled environment (household tea making process) and estimated some secondary metabolites and antioxidant potential of Darjeeling Green-Lemon Tea (DGLT) and Darjeeling Black-Lemon Tea (DBLT). Lemon juice additions resulted in lessening the concentrations of polyphenols and especially, the tannins but the rate of decrement lowered with higher quantity of juice additions leading to the fact that lemon exerts its protective role to arrest the oxidation of metabolites. The flavonoids content, infact increased than the normal due to higher quantity of lemon juice additions. The study tried to establish a relationship between the quantity of lemon juice added and the infusion time of tea and suggested the optimum condition for having the best nutritional benefit from the drink, if the antioxidant property is concerned.

CROW-FUKASE SYNDROME, A RARE CASE: FIRST OF ITS KIND REPORTED IN A TERTIARY HOSPITAL IN MAKURDI, NIGERIA

Crow-Fukase syndrome also known as POEMS syndrome or Takatsuki disease or PEP syndrome (Plasma cell dyscrasia, Endocrinopathy and Polyneuropathy) is a rare multisystem disorder that is associated with plasma cell neoplasm. The syndrome is made up of polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal gammamopathy, and skin changes. We report here the first case of Crow-Fukase syndrome in a five year old tertiary hospital, in the north central region of Nigeria.

RESPONSE OF MUNGBEAN TO VARIOUS LEVELS OF PLANTING DENSITY AND PHOSPHORUS

Abstracts
The present study was carried out to determine the response of mungbean to various levels of planting density and phosphorus. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design under split plot arrangement having three replications at the Research Area of University College of Agriculture, Sargodha, Punjab, Pakistan during the spring seasons of 2013. Planting density was assigned in the main plots (20 cm, 30 cm and 40 cm row spacing), whereas phosphorus rates (40, 80, and 120 kg ha-1) were applied in sub plots. The net plot size was 2.4 m x 6 m. Observations on various agro-physiological parameters of crop was recorded using standard procedures. Data analysis was performed by Fisher’s analysis of variance, and the means statistically different were separated by LSD at 5% probability level. Plant height at harvest and number of seed per pods were not significantly affected while number of pod bearing branches, numbers of pods per plant, 1000-grain weight, seed yield and total dry matter were affected significantly by the planting density. The highest seed yield (977.71 kg ha-1) was obtained at planting density when the crop was sown at a distance of 30 cm row spacing (333333 plant ha-1) and phosphorus was applied at the rate of 80 kg ha-1.
